The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species of Malaysia
National Red List of Threatened Species of Malaysia (updated on 30 June 2016)
According to IUCN Red List of Threatened Species , there are nine species categories, including two plant species categories, are being monitored by IUCN. The nine categories are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, molluscs, other invertebrates, plants and fungi & protists (refer to Table 5). Given that the priority of this website is focusing on wildlife species, the major seven species categories, which are typically native to Malaysia and currently threatened with extinction, are the focus. However, much attention are given to Malaysia's species that are being listed under the threatened categories, namely Critically Threatened (CR), Endangered (EN), and Vulnerable (VU). In IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, 'native' directs to the species that are currently occurring within their natural range (past or present) and dispersal potential (i.e. within the range they occupy naturally or could occupy without direct or indirect introduction or care by humans).
The seven categories are:
As referred to Table 6a [Red List Category summary country totals (Animals)], the total of threatened species in Malaysia is 544.
There are currently no species from Malaysia which lies within the major seven categories, are being listed as 'Extinct' (EX). Yet, Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) is recently being categorised as 'Extinct in the Wild' (EW) while Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni) is being listed as 'Critically endangered' (CR) in Malaysia.
Please go to each of the IUCN Red List Categories namely Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN) and Vulnerable (VU), to check out the list of listed species in each of the species categories for more information.
